San Anselmo grew up along its creeks and the old railroad line. Many of its houses began as summer places for San Francisco families, before the town incorporated in 1907.
Remodeling in San Anselmo: what to know
Permits come from the Town of San Anselmo’s Building & Safety office, applied for online through the Town’s eTrakit portal. On the higher hillside lots (any part at or above 150 feet), a new home, a second-story addition or an addition over 500 square feet goes through the Town’s design review, which looks at materials, colours and neighbours’ privacy.
Water shapes remodels here. San Anselmo Creek overran its banks on New Year’s Eve 2005, flooding downtown and nearby streets. The County has since built a flood-storage basin upstream and is still weighing other ways to lower the risk. For ground-floor work near a creek, we look at floor heights and drainage first.
The Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority inspects defensible space around homes in town, starting with the first five feet around the house, which must be kept clear of anything that burns. A new deck or fence is a good time to get that right.
In Sleepy Hollow we remodeled a house, with a new kitchen, white oak floors and a rebuilt fireplace, and in San Anselmo we redid a bathroom with a marble tub surround and a floating vanity.
