Remodeling in Fairfax: what to know
Permits come from the Town’s Planning and Building Services department at 142 Bolinas Road, which issues building permits Monday to Thursday.
Steep lots get extra attention here. Fairfax has a Hill Area Residential Development overlay for lots where building on the slope means a lot of digging or fill, lots mapped for landslides, and lots reached by an unpaved road. A project under it can need Planning Commission approval at a public hearing. We find out whether it applies before any design work starts.
Fairfax is part of the Ross Valley watershed, and the December 2005 flood reached Fairfax too, so on a low lot we think about drainage early. Defensible space around homes in town is inspected by the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority.
In Fairfax we rebuilt a front stair whose framing had rotted underneath, from new framing up to new treads.
